Celebrating new transport infrastructure whilst respecting the old
As part of its wider sustainable urban development strategy, the city of Cologne is extending the StadtBahn Süd tram line, connecting the city centre with the districts of Rondorf and Meschenich in the south. The new tram route will cross over Cologne's ring road at Arnoldshöhe roundabout, which marks one end of Germany's first Autobahn, the A555.
Connecting Cologne and Bonn, each end of the A555 is marked by the 'Standortmitte' artwork, twin red sculptures punctuating the 22.5km journey between the two cities.
Knight Architects, together with Schüßler-Plan, have been appointed to design the new tram bridge crossing the roundabout. The new structure elegantly sweeps across the busy junction, successfully blending mass public transit infrastructure with the established intercity road network. Positioned in close proximity to the 'Standortmitte', the path of the tram bridge both celebrates and respects the important cultural landmark.
