Landscape integration, resilience, and sustainability
The town of Abergavenny and the village of Llanfoist are part of a common populated area in South Wales divided by the River Usk. The main existing connection between them is a 17th Century (medieval in origin) Grade II* listed masonry bridge which is too narrow to provide a comfortable and safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.
The new crossing will naturally follow the pedestrian and cyclist desire line with a simple and elegant design: a 3m-wide two-span (25m+36m) layout with a U-shaped cross section and a four-armed pier, using high-quality materials (timber and stainless steel). The design has a positive and respectful relationship with the stone bridge and the surrounding environment and will be robust and resilient in a floodplain that is subjected to regular, significant flooding. The deck will be above the water level of the 1 in 100 year flood, and the ramps will be parallel to the water flow and read as a subtle alteration of the existing topography.
Knight Architects’ scope included the alternatives analysis, conceptual design, and architectural input during the developed design, planning application and detailed design stages.
