Oxford's journey towards a more connected and sustainable future

Oxford City Council is embarking on a new journey to enhance the walking and cycling infrastructure within the city through the development of the Oxpens River Bridge.

The new 100m-long pedestrian and cycle bridge, serving as an active mobility link, will connect with its main span of 37.5m Osney Mead to Oxpens and onwards to the city centre, serving as a crucial link for local residents and commuters. By providing efficient and safe routes for walking and cycling, the bridge aims to alleviate congestion in and around the Oxford City Centre.

The bridge design prioritises visual lightness and integration with the surrounding landscape, particularly over the meadow. The design minimises impacts on views by placing support structures strategically: the two waves are positioned within vegetated parts of the site to frame views and create rhythm. Meaningful pre-application engagement and design communication helped the bridge successfully navigate the planning process, with approval granted in April 2024. The crossing is scheduled to open in 2025.
