Cambridge active mobility bridge on Structural Steel Awards shortlist
22 June 2022
Forming an integral part of the 26km-long Chisholm Trail in Cambridge, Knight Architects' Abbey-Chesterton bridge has been shortlisted in the annual Structural Steel Design Awards.
The pedestrian and cycle bridge takes the form of an ornate lattice U-beam, with a structural pattern wrapped around the deck. Active mobility users enjoy a wide deck whose inclined parapet follows a gently curving profile. The intersecting ribs create a pattern of ‘picture window’ openings through which bridge users can enjoy views of the river and Ditton Meadows.
The judges selected 21 projects for the shortlist, showcasing steel’s sustainability credentials, flexibility and versatility in a number of different and varying applications.
The winners will be announced at an evening reception in London on 29 September.
