Finland’s new landmark emerges from the fog!

11 March 2025

Helsinki’s Kruunusillat (Crown Bridges) project has reached a significant structural milestone with the completion of its 135m pylon, now the tallest bridge structure in Finland. This landmark crossing will connect the city centre to Laajasalo, enabling the development of a brand-new waterside community.

Now standing at its full height, the distinctive diamond form of the pylon – an architectural reference to the historic crown ownership of the bay area – will become an instantly recognisable symbol of Helsinki.

Unusually for such a long bridge, Kruunusillat will be car-free – carrying only a new light rail line connecting to Helsinki's extensive tram network, as well as a route for cyclists and pedestrians. This commitment to sustainable public transport and active mobility forms part of Helsinki’s wider target of becoming a car-free city by 2030, with Laajasalo master planned as a largely car-free community.

With cable installation currently underway, the next phase will see the removal of temporary supports. The bridge is on track for completion later this year.
