Ground-breaking modular rail bridge revealed
16 June 2021
The prototype for Network Rail's new standardised footbridge, designed to improve safety at level crossings, has been revealed at the company's Long Marston test site as part of the Rail Live event 16-17 June 2021. The innovative structure was conceived by Knight Architects and developed alongside a talented group of specialists, largely remotely as a result of the global pandemic.
The project challenged the design team to find a way to deliver a user-focused footbridge that is not only cheaper but quicker to produce than a steel equivalent, and adaptable to a wide range of locations. By using a range of modern composites, the different properties of which are tailored to their location and structural function, the design concept achieves a lightweight, strong and cost-effective solution.
