KA appointed to deliver Sunderland's 'smart bridge'

Knight Architects is excited to be leading the detailed architectural design for Sunderland's new £31m pedestrian and cycle crossing, alongside VolkerStevin, Arup and Newcastle-based landscape architects, Colour. Focus will be on encouraging maximum active mobility in and around Sunderland Riverside by carefully considering the user experience of the bridge in its surroundings.

The new bridge is a central part of Sunderland’s new Riverside Park and will provide the Riverside Sunderland Masterplan with key connectivity between new neighbourhoods and the civic centre, as well as access to biodiverse blue and green spaces of the riverside.

Development of the detailed design begins this year in advance of construction starting in summer 2022, with opening expected in 2024.
