Pioneering rail bridge connecting Germany and Poland opens

01 August 2024

Yesterday saw the official opening of the Küstrin-Kietz Rail Bridge - a landmark project on the German/Polish border that celebrates European cooperation between the two nations.

Bart Halaczek, Project Lead for the Küstrin bridges, was on site with our partners from sbp and Schüßler-Plan to join the inauguration ceremony alongside invited dignitaries from both Germany and Poland.

The innovative crossing will help to increase line capacity and shorten travel times by allowing a maximum permissible speed of 120km/h, enabling the revival of rail travel both regionally and internationally, whilst contributing to the shift towards more sustainable means of transportation.

“Our concept provided a simple, clear and elegant design solution that distilled the complexity of a large railway development project to a single object with powerful, symbolic meaning and we welcome the tenacity with which the client and engineers retained the original design intent.”

- Bart Halaczek, Director at Knight Architects
