Cologne's latest structural landmark embraces active mobility

13 February 2025

Awarded 2nd place in a recent competition, our proposal for Cologne's newest bridge is a thoughtfully designed active mobility landmark that provide spectacular and unobstructed south-facing views, framing the city skyline and the beloved Cathedral. Beyond aesthetics, the design ensures year-round accessibility, including during seasonal flooding in the Rhine Park.

A sustainable and resilient crossing, the bridge features naturally separated pedestrian and cycle paths through the arch planes, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience for all users. Thoughtful on-deck furniture, lighting and outlooks transform the structure into a joyful placemaking destination.

Developed in collaboration with Leonhardt, Andrä and Partner, Bierbaum Aichele Landschaftsarchitekten and Durth Roos Consulting, the vision was to create a crossing that is more than just a bridge. The design carefully respects its historic surroundings, maintaining a relationship between the neighbouring Zoo and Hohenzoller Bridges as well as the distinctive 1924 Bastei building on the west bank.
