Major Kent road junction reopens after £100m overhaul
20 February 2025
The historically dangerous and busy M2 Junction 5 in Kent has reopened after a major upgrade. Aiming to improve journey times and safety as well as support economic growth, the £100m National Highways project saw a complete redesign including a centrepiece flyover. At nearly one mile in length, the new flyover is supported by two bridges and features a series of six extensive retaining walls of up to 8m in height and totalling over 3,000m2.
The design challenge was not only the scale of the intervention but also its sensitive location within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). Our solution uses flint as the finish material on precast retaining wall panels, with intermediate ribbed panels. The bespoke design secured the support of the planning authority and reduced the quantity of stone by more than 30% from the scheme approved at DCO.
The project was constructed by Graham in collaboration with Sweco, Knight Architects and specialist supplier Reinforced Earth Company.
