Milestone over the River Wear in Sunderland

Earlier this week, Simon and Filip travelled to Sunderland to witness the completion of the New Wear Footbridge superstructure. The 4th and final steel section arrived by barge and was lifted into place to connect the north and south embankments and complete the 250m-long bridge.

Sharing the moment with our design team partner Arup, as well as the VolkerStevin contractor team, was very special. Completion is scheduled for summer 2025.

Our skilled and empathetic interventions to the detailed design will not only provide users with a leading piece of active mobility infrastructure, but also a create new public realm at the heart of Riverside Sunderland which celebrates the locations history and surroundings.
