National Highways' M2 J5 scheme taking shape
21 June 2023
Work on the new M2 J5 interchange is making great progress, with the eye-pleasing retaining walls taking shape. Our infrastructure design expertise has focused on minimising the visual height and appearance of the walls, harmonising sensitively with the surrounding landscape of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Working with Graham, RECo and Macrete, we developed a system of bespoke precast flint-faced panels that respond to the traditional materials used in the area, positioning them alongside ribbed concrete panels to break up the walls' visual mass.
The concept was developed through regular engagement with the local authorities, Kent Downs AONB and Natural England. Specific rules were defined to ensure the quality, repeatability and consistency of the panels and their construction. This was key to maintain the high quality of the design and creating a positive user experience for motorists as well as being a respectful addition to the surrounding landscape. Several rounds of prototypes were made in order to refine the specification. We look forward to seeing the scheme develop further over the coming months.
