New Pooley Bridge features on RIBAJ MacEwen Awards longlist
16 December 2021
Architecture for the common good: this is the RIBA Journal's MacEwen Awards premise and we are absolutely delighted that New Pooley Bridge features in the diverse longlist of this most special of award programmes.
Conceived in the aftermath of Storm Desmond, when the original 18th century stone arch structure was washed away, the new crossing reconnects a community that was left bereft and isolated in late 2015.
The opening of the bridge has been an emotional relief to the Lake District community and has restored the normality of the village after five years. The new structure has been carefully designed following an intense stakeholder engagement process, listening to the community and focusing on their common aspirations to achieve a design that fits with their sense of identity and satisfies the technical standards.
