Work starts on sensitive Tower Bridge refurbishment

21 January 2025

Over the past 130 years, Tower Bridge has become one of the most recognisable bridges in the world. It is a highly designated structure which is synonymous with the City of London and indeed the country as whole.

Like many historic bridges, it is a highly protected structure - Grade I listed in this case - as well as a placemaking asset. Yet, it also remains a working bridge, tourist attraction and a vital connection across the Thames, with around 40,000 people using it daily (motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians).

Knight Architects are pleased to be working once again with City Bridge Foundation – the 900-year-old charity which looks after Tower Bridge at no cost to the taxpayer – and the City of London Corporation on one of several projects designed to sensitively improve the safety and resilience of this unique bridge.

Together with Alan Baxter, EMMAUS Consulting, Hardesty & Hanover, PIB Risk Management and Watts, we are working on refurbishing the six bascule 'mud tank chambers' to improve the structural and mechanical resilience of the bridge as well as the safety of its operation, ensuring that it remains a treasured feature of London’s skyline for centuries to come.
