The A465 Trunk Road provides a vital east-west connection to, from and between the heads of the South Wales Valleys.
The improvements involve the dualling of the road, addition of several road bridges, foot bridges and retaining walls.
Knight Architects worked with Atkins and Costain on ‘Section 2’, which passes through a heavily protected environment including World Heritage Site status, SAMs, SSSIs and Conservation Areas. As part of the scheme the team has designed a series of footbridges to provide local access through the corridor.
The weathering-steel structures form a ‘family’ of bridges, which provide visual continuity across the route. The bridges include tortion-beams which sweep out over the valley, as well as a simple beam providing access to the local school.
