Project Overview
In 2017, the Government of Bermuda commissioned the design of two replacement highway bridges, linking LF Wade International Airport with the rest of the island.
As well as providing critical infrastructure links, the two bridges will form distinctive landmarks for visitors arriving at the international airport and have been conceived to make a positive contribution to the tourism identity of this extraordinary place.
The bridge designs follow a set of overarching visual characteristics that will define the crossings as a family. Each bridge has a curvaceous and flowing appearance, defined by a small number of continuous edge curves, accentuated by the colourful palette associated with the architecture of Bermuda.
Longbird Bridge will be a fixed twin-arch design, carrying a twin-lane highway onto the Causeway, replacing the temporary structures which have served for 10 years.
The curved design minimises the collection of water on the bridges, an important factor in resisting the corrosive effects of the tropical maritime climate.
