The reality is that measures which restrict people’s behaviour can, if misjudged in design, undermine the perceived quality and result in an unwelcome, claustrophobic experience for users.
Our solution was to integrate the containment requirements within the superstructure. We proposed a Vierendeel truss, internally clad with glass to create a series of windows framing the city views.
With its low-maintenance requirement and industrial appearance, weathering steel was an ideal material for the railway environment. It was just as important that the internal bridge environment complements Westfield’s retail aesthetic. The continuous internal glazing, when viewed along the deck, creates a seamless ribbon of reflective surface, drawing users into the shopping development.
